Ohio Governor, Columbus Mayor. A native of Coalton, Ohio, he served as the Governor of Ohio from 1963 to 1971, and 1975 to 1983, but was defeated in 1950, 1954, and 1986. Along with Alabama Governor George Corley Wallace, he was the longest serving Governor in United States history. He also served as Mayor of Columbus, Ohio, from 1943 to 1952, and Ohio Auditor of State from 1953 to 1963. He was a candidate for the Republican Nomination for President in 1964 and 1968, and a candidate in primary for United States Senator from Ohio in 1970. In 1970 he made the decision to send the National Guard to the Kent State University campus to quell protesting of the Vietnam war. Four students lost their lives due to gunfire. Governor Rhodes was exonerated in court of any wrongdoing in relation to the deaths of the four students. He died in Columbus, Ohio, in 2001 at the age of 91.
