Governor of Ohio. He served as the 58th governor of Ohio from January 3, 1957 to January 14, 1957, which was a total of eleven days. Born in Athens, Ohio, he graduated from Lancaster High School in 1932 and engaged in business pursuits. Brown became an officer for the Ohio Highway Patrol and moved to Medina, Ohio in 1941. When the United States entered World War II, he joined the Coast Guard and served overseas. After the war, he returned to Medina and was later elected as Mayor in 1950. In 1953, he was elected as a Republican as Lieutenant Governor of Ohio. Governor Frank Lausche did not seek reelection in 1956, and Brown became the Republican Party candidate. He was unsuccessful for election in 1956. He became Ohio's 58th Governor anyway when Lausche resigned to accept election to the U.S. Senate eleven days before his term was over. Lieutenant Governor Brown succeeded him and assumed Ohio's highest political office until Governor Elect C. William O'Neill's term began. As Governor, Brown made an inaugural speech, moved into the Governor's Mansion, and was instrumental in ending a telephone company strike. He then served terms in the Ohio Legislature as a State House Representative in 1959 and 1960, and as a State Senator in 1961. In 1962, he was once again elected as Lieutenant Governor and served consecutive terms under James Rhodes and John J. Gilligan. He was also a member of the American Legion, Forty and Eight, and a Freemason.
