Education was a very vital part of Nellie Siemon's life. Getting her education was so important for her that in order for her to finish high school, she lived above the city jail and served meals to inmates during her junior year. Throughout her life, every chance she had, Nellie would return to college for night courses or correspondence courses until she earned her college degree the same year as her son did. She also passed on her education, working as a teacher for most of her life.

Nellie Siemon of Mobridge and formerly of Ocheydan, Iowa, died at the Golden LivingCenter, Mobridge, Sept. 13, 2007. She was 97 years old.

Nellie Siemon was born March 21, 1910 near Worthington, Minn., one of seven children born to Claus and Eva (DeVries) Huisenga. Nellie was raised in Rushmore, Minn., and attended high school in Worthington. She worked for years to complete her college degree until in 1968 she earned a B.S. in Elementary Education from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, the same year her son David received his degree from Northern State University.

Nellie taught in rural schools in Rushmore, Minn. and Sibley, Iowa and also at Harris/Lake Park, Iowa Public School until she completed her degree. She then taught in Fonda, Iowa, until her retirement.

Nellie married John Henry Siemon in Sibley, Iowa, on Sept. 10, 1936. The couple operated a General store in Ocheydan for many years. In 1943, misfortune came in the form of fire to their store. They advertised a huge "fire" sale and canned goods were sold without labels and fabric sold after being washed. Every clothesline in the neighborhood was filled with yards and yards of material. Six weeks later, the couple was back in business with lots of new merchandise.

In May 2000, Nellie moved to Mobridge to be near her son David (and Rubye) Siemon and was a resident of the Golden LivingCenter until her death.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ocheyedan, Eastern Star, and United Federated Women's Club Past Matrons.

Nellie is survived by two sons David (Rubye) Siemon, Mobridge, Earl (Kathy) Siemon, Thomson, Ill.; a son-in-law, Mark Rundle, Cumming, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Shane (Kathy) Siemon, Chad (Mandy) Siemon, Jason (Lara) Siemon, Ann (Eric) Nordeen, Scott (Kim) Rundle, Stephanie (Markus) Nelson and Stavey (Ed) Lynch; and six great grandchildren, Staci Ganje, Christine and Colin Siemon, Justin and Elizabeth Lynch and Errol Siemon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, and daughter Suzanne Rundle.

The funeral service was held Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan with Pastors Keith Kraft and Douglas P. Harding officiating. Burial was in the Sibley Cemetary in Sibley, Iowa, under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge and Walton-Roste Funeral Home of Sibley.

Casketbearers were Shane and Kathy Siemon, Chad and Mandy Siemon, Jason and Lara Siemon, Stephanie and Markus Nelson, Scott and Kim Rundle, Stacey and Ed Lynch and Ann and Eric Nordeen. Honorary casketbearers were her great grandchildren.
