Jack L. Applegate, 72, Martinsville, died on February. 14, 2003, at Regional Medical Center Baynot Point, Hudson, Fla.

The son of the late Oral Wesley and Mable Marie (Bryant) Applegate, he was born on Jan. 13, 1931, in Owen County. He married Nila Myers on June 24, 1955. She survives in Martinsville.

Applegate retired from Eli Lilly in 1991 after 36 years.

He was a member of the Baptist Church in Gosport and the Knife Collectors Club.

He was a 1949 graduate of Gosport High School and served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955 He enjoyed camping, boating on the Ohio River, hunting, fishing and collecting knives.

Survivors include two sons, three daughters, fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A sister, Esther Marie Applegate, preceded him in death.

Burial will be in Samaria Cemetery in Paragon.
