His family is in Washington Co., Indiana in the 1820 census. 1850 census says he was born in North Carolina, 1860 census says he was born in Missouri and 1870 census says he was born in New Jersey. His older brother by a year and a half, Jonas, was born in "Louisiana" and so was his younger sister Elizabeth. At the time of their births, Missouri did not exist and it was part of Louisiana. It would be probable to assume that the family had left North Carolina on their eventual journey to Missouri and then to Washington Co., Indiana.
