Jefferson was the 1st of 9 children (1st son) born of Lemma Bartholomew (1787-1873) and his wife Elizabeth (Betsey) Sherwood Bishop (1787-1871). Jefferson's siblings were: Thomas (1810-1811), Emily (b. 1812), Justus (1814-1876), Bishop (1817-1901), Mary (1819-1879), Amanda (1821-1859), Betsy (1823-1844), and Fanny (1825-1854).

Jefferson married for his 1st wife Sarah (Sallie) (Sally) Bartholomew (1811-1840) by whom he had three children (all sons): Levi (1832-1897), Squire & William (1840-1920). After his first wife died, he married Frorilla Merriam by whom he had one child (a daughter): Sarah Ann.
