George helped mine coal when a young lad around the Kulmont/Easton, Pa. area. Most of the Smutko/Parkansky family were coal miners and George helped the family and helped take coal into Philadelphia to sell by the bag full.
Entering the National Guard in 1935 at Philadelphia in the Mounted Calvary. Went on active duty in 1940 and Officers Candidate school in 1942, graduated 2nd Lieutenant. He served in India during WW11 in CBS, a tour of duty at the indian Embassy. He then served in Japan & Taiwan, afterward serving a tour of duty in Arizona & Colorado Springs, Co. He returned to Japan for 2 years, then to the US to New Jersey where he was in command of a radar station for 4 years. He finished his Army career at Kestler & retired in 1969 a full Colonel.

Retired Jan. 1, 1970 with the rank of Colonel with the following awards: Soldiers Medal, WW11 Victory Medal, Asia/Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, Korean Service Medal, Air Force Reserve Service Medal, National Defence Service Medal, Aid Force Longivity Service Medal with 3 Bronxe Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal.
