Murder Victim. He and his younger brother Alex were murder victims in a widely-publicized tragedy. In an hysterical state, their mother, Susan Smith, reported to the Union County (South Carolina) Police Department that a black man had carjacked her at knifepoint. This man had instructed her to get out of her car but drove away with Michael and Alex still in the car. A huge nationwide search ensued with distribution of wanted posters showing the children and alleged kidnapper's photos. Media coverage was nation-wide with daily updates. Several days later, after being repeatedly questioned about the discrepancies in her story by the Union County sheriff, the mother finally confessed to police that she had allowed her car to roll into John D. Long Lake with her children still inside. Believing a man, with whom she was emotionally involved, no longer wanted a relationship with a woman with children, she felt rejected. To remedy her problem, she initially drove her car down the ramp at John D. Long Lake to commit suicide and murder her two young sons. She continued to confess that at the last second, she exited the car and allowed it to roll down the ramp with her two sons still strapped in their car seats. Upon learning this, divers searched the lake recovering Susan's Mazda Protege with the bodies of Michael and Alex still strapped in their car seats. Michael, the oldest, was holding his little brother's hand. Susan is now serving a life sentence in prison.
