President Abraham Lincoln's Life Figure. The Greens were early pioneers and settled 1/2 mile north of New Salem, Illinois. Bowling Green was a close friend and mentor to Abraham Lincoln. Bowling Green sort of nudged Abraham Lincoln into politics. Bowling and Nancy Green took Mr. Lincoln into their home when he was despondent over the death of Ann Rutledge. They may have saved his life since many witnesses felt that Mr. Lincoln was close to suicide. Abraham Lincoln again stayed with Mrs. Green after his friend Bowling Green died. He escorted Mrs. Green to and from the funeral and delivered a eulogy.
