J. Q. Staples Former Winona Mayor Passes
On Saturday night, October 25th, the death of John Quitman Staples, Sr., retired businessman, political leader and former Mayor, occurred at his home here after a long illness. Services were held Sunday afternoon at three o'clock from the Trewolla Funeral Home with Rev. C. B. Hamlet, pastor of the Baptist Church, and Rev. R. S. Lowe, Presbyterian minister, officiating. Interment followed in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Staples was born September 6, 1879, in the town of Huntsville, the son of J. A. Q. Staples and Mary Carlyn Davis Staples. He made his residence in Stewart for many years where he married Ave Mae Edwards, who preceded him in death twenty years ago. Three children were born of this union who survive: Mrs. Mary Emily Staples Henderson of Gadsden, Tenn., Mrs. Nan Staples Joest of Memphis and John Quitman Staples, Jr., of Rosedale.
Mr. Staples entered the mercantile business in Stewart as a young man. In 1914, he moved to Winona, where he was affiliated with the C. & G. Railroad until 1918. In that year he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of the late G. W. Dantzler, as mayor. He was re-elected to that office, which he held through 1926. During the latter years of his life, he lived on his farm near Winona.
In 1937, he was married to Mrs. Ida Belle Jeter, who survives. In addition to his children and three grandchildren, he is survived by the following step children: Mrs. Bobby Cooper of Winona, Miss Cornelia Jeter, Jackson, and Marvin Jeter, West Point; one sister, Mrs. Johnson Rowe, Winona; two brothers, Davis Staples, Arcola, and Balfour Staples, Winona and one uncle, L. L. Davis, Kilmichael.
