Son of Elizabeth Barker and Abijah Cadwell.

His father's first wife, Eunice Allyn had died with their first son in 1794.

Curtis had three siblings born to his mother: they were - Almira (Elmira), b. abt. 1801 (md Elias Sr. Adams, at Six Mile Prairie, Adams, ILL. in 1822); Solomon, b. abt. 1805 (md. Mary Johnson at Scotland Co., MO. on 19 Nov. 1843) and Eunice, b. abt. 1807 (md. Henry Osborn at Adams Co, ILL., 10 Feb. 1839).

Curtis Married (1)- September 1832, Sarah McIntire (born 1813 in Kentucky); they had ten children; known at this time are: Lucy A. Cadwell Ralph, born 30 June 1833-died 20 August 1884; Joseph W. 1836; Mary Adeline 1838; William Curtis , born 1840-died 14 August 1911; Helen 1842; Sarah Jane 1844; Julia 1845; and Martha F. 1848. (dates are approximate, from census records, except for Lucy A. & William Curtis)

Sarah died 11 November 1856 and he married (2) at Adams County, Illinois on 18 June 1863, Mrs. Catherine B. Davis (born 4 March 1805 at Athens, Ohio,).

ABOUT THE GRAVESTONE:

The standing photo (Top) was taken in October 2009. The two others (Middle & Bottom) were taken in November 2011. A huge tree, near the stone, had been toppled by age or wind and knocked the stone on its' face. When found, it took four people to turn it on its back, so that the inscription could be seen. The base and riser were intact, but separated from this section. The tree entanglement hovering over it was so massive, that it is a wonder it was not shattered in pieces. The stone is solid granite and about 4" thick. Beautifully carved, by a skilled stone mason, as are so many others in this sad little cemetery, that it is a shame restoration of these historic sites is poorly lacking. We, who live such a far distance away, are grateful for at least a photograph.
