Jonathan Lyon was born in 1812 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania.
He married Nancy J. Dawson in 1833. She died in 1847.
In 1849, Jonathan married Jane Wright.

Jonathan volunteered for the Civil War at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 11, 1862. He was a Private in Company D of the 139th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. His name appears on the Civil War section of the Georgetown Veterans Memorial on Market Street.

In December 1854, Jonathan Lyon, his wife Jane, and Robert D. Dawson sold a lot in the Borough of Georgetown for $25. It was formerly owned by Abraham Lyon, then was owned and in the possession of Jonathan for 23 years.

Jonathan Lyon, a resident of Georgetown Borough, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, died of rheumatism and irritative fever at 5 p.m. on January 19, 1883. He died with an appraisal of $700 and a final account of $650. Jonathan died intestate, without making a legal will. His wife Jane could not write, so she put a / to show her right to administer the will and requested Samuel Trimble to administer the estate. The children also signed their mark with a /: William, Lewis, James, Jonathan, Abram, and Annie Cornell. The signing of the document was witnessed by J.H. Cornell, John Wright, and Samuel Lyon, who wrote their names.

Burial was in the Georgetown Cemetery. A new metal grave marker was later installed.
