John J Garrity was born in Ireland, arriving in the United States in 1845. The 1850 census has him in an immigrant hotel in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, 24 years old and working as a carpenter. In 1856, in New Orleans, he married Catherine Agnes Hines, the daughter of Martin Hines and Catherine Sweeney, all from Ireland.

By 1860, John and Catherine had fled the Mississippi area to avoid the Yellow Fever, settling Tuolumne County, California. There, they had the following children: * Peter Corcoran 1860-1936 * Margaret, Mrs Patrick Egan 1862-1948 * Daniel Corcoran 1863-1936 * Catherine, Mrs Thomas Blair 1865-1951 * William K Corcoran 1866-1940 * Mary Agnes, Mrs George Agnew 1868-1954 * John J Corcoran 1869-1942 * Thomas Francis Corcoran 1872-1947 * Julia Isabelle, Mrs John Tyron 1879-1962 * Edward E Corcoran 1879-1952 * Alice Corcoran 1879-1883 * Ellen Corcoran 1881-1884 John became a citizen, naturalized on 05 December 1866 at the 6th Judicial Court in Sacramento County.

The 1867 voter registration has him listed as a farmer at Deer Creek. His two youngest children died at the Corcoran Ranch, Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne County. John had been kicked in the head by one of his horses, and died in front of the Raboul store, which would become the Iron Door Saloon. Word was sent to Sonora to bring back a doctor, and John was taken into the store, but John died before the doctor arrived.
