Pleasant Citizen Is Dead
John Matson, of Pleasant died Tuesday noon at his home there after a long Matson had undergone an operation at the Cameron Hospital recently for temporary relief of condition, and had been taken to his home from the hospital on Sunday. For nearly forty years, Matson owned and operated a hardware store in Pleasant Lake, closing out this business last fall. Mr. Matson served two terms totaling years as County Commissioner of the South District, his second term expiring January 1 of this year. Mr. Matson was a member the Masonic order and an active worker in church circles in his community. Throughout the county, he had a wide circle of friends who respected him for his integrity and willingness to share in civic and community responsibilities.
The survivors include the widow, Bessie, one daughter, Mrs. Paul Chasey of Pleasant Lake and one son. Jack, of Cincinnati. Funeral services will be conducted at the Baptist Church in Pleasant Lake at three o'clock on Thursday afternoon, with former pastors and friends, Rev. W. Maners Independence, Kentucky; Rev. E.A. Kelford, Eaton Rapids. Michigan and Rev. L.E. Bryton of the Baptist Church in Pleasant Lake and Rev. R.G. Upson, a close friend and neighbor uniting in giving the funeral service. Burial will be in the Pleasant Lake Cemetery.

John O. Matson, who for a number of years has been one of the leading business men and merchants of Steuben County, was born in Steuben Township November 4, 1878 and was reared in Pleasant Lake, attending the high school there. He acquired a business training as clerk with the firm of Chadwick & Ransburg for six years. In May 1903 he bought the hardware store at Pleasant Lake from H.A. Gish and for over fifteen years has continued a profitable business as a merchant, gradually extending his lines to include furniture and agricultural implements. Mr. Matson is a Republican, but has never sought office and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge and Knights of the Macabees. He has been a member of the Baptist Church for over twenty years.
July 31, 1900 he married Miss Bessie B. Lemmon. She was born in Steuben County, a daughter of Riley and Lorana (Tuttle) Lemmon. Mr. and Mrs. Matson have two children: June Maurine born March 22, 1904 and John Lewis born January 31, 1916.
