Louis Gaskill was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gaskill. He married Nellie Rogers and they were the parents of three children, Lutie M., Bertha L. and Hattie.

He enlisted May 8 1861 in the 28th Regiment of NY Volunteers and mustered May 22 as Sergeant of CO G.

He was promotoed October 9, 1863 to 2nd Lieutenant in CO A, and on January 18, 1863 was detailed to command CO C until March 16, 1863. He was honorably discharged June 2, 1863.
