A nurse during the Civil War, Clapp founded the Ladies Union Aid Society in 1861. She became the President of the LUAS & also worked as a member of the Western Sanitary Commission (WSC). Clapp became one of St. Louis' leading spokeswoman for veterans benefits & pensions for female nurses after the war.
