The Army transferred him to Alaska, for health reasons, where he was part of the group that laid miles of military telegraph lines. After his retirement from the Army in 1910, but before returning to duty due to the outbreak of World War I, he was injured while exploring for gold. His concept of a razor that did not require soap and water was initially conceived during his recovery. It took him more than a decade to overcome the technical challenges. He successfully patented the first ever electric dry razor but early designs were crude and impractical and sales were sluggish. The one handed model was introduced in 1931 and sales grew rapidly in the following two years making him a millionaire. His other patents include an improved pencil sharpener and a boat for shallow water use.
