Born in Waterbury, Connecticut, he was a 19th century Major Leaguer best known for having the home run record of 138 until it was surpassed by Babe Ruth in 1921. As a infielder, he made his debut with the Troy Trojans on May 1, 1880. For eighteen seasons, he played with the Troy Trojans (1880-82), New York Gothams (1883-89, 1891, 1893), New York Giants in 1890, Philadelphia Phillies in 1892 and St. Louis Browns (1894-97). He ended his career with 2,535 hits, 1,607 runs scored, 138 home runs, 1,323 runs batted in and a .316 batting average. He died at age 73 in Waterbury, Connecticut and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
