US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1865 and commenced law practice in Hillsboro, Illinois. From 1866 to 1869, he was City Attorney of Hillsboro and elected judge of the Montgomery County Court in 1869, serving until 1873. In 1887, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
