Dr. McKnight was married to Augusta Margaret Bethany McKnight. Dr. McKnight died at a very early age and Augusta raised their three young sons.

Dr. William Wesley McKnight set up his medical practice in Stewart because the town was close to his home at Bywy and he felt that Stewart, with its mills and good agricultural land, would grow into a larger town. Dr. McKnight's son, Everett A. McKnight, relates this story about his father. "When he came to town to set up an office he got off the train and walked over to Jim Bailey's store. Mr. Bailey was sitting on the porch and Dr. McKnight stopped to pass the time and exchange conversation with him. After Mr. Bailey found out he was a young doctor and looking for an office location, Mr. Bailey remarked, ‘A big husky boy like you ought to be plowing a team of horses in a field'."

Dr. McKnight was fond of Stewart and its people. His practice increased rapidly. He also liked farming and cleared land and built houses and barns. Dr. McKnight only practiced medicine for 11 years. He died at the age of 34 of pneumonia. Sharing an office with Dr. McKnight was Dr. J.B. Harris, another of the first doctors in Stewart.
