William 'Woody' McKnight

William "Woody" McKnight, 62, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at his home. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at Natchez Trace Funeral Home in Madison and 10- 1 1 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.


Mr. McKnight was born November 21, 1941, in Cleves, Ohio. Upon graduation from Beardstown, III. High School he joined the United States Navy. He was a graduate of the United States Navy Sonar School in Key West, Florida and served aboard the USS Peregrine (mine sweeper) as a sonar man. He served in the Cuban Crisis and was in Havana when Fidel Castro marched in and took over Cuba.


In 1963, after discharge from the Navy, he joined Mississippi Power and Light which later became Entergy. He began as a groundsman and later became part of ICS Distribution Engineering. He later retired after 38 1/2 years due to his long battle with cancer.


His hobbies became the computer in which he became a master. At age 60 he got a dog, Candy, who was his constant companion even at death. Woody will be remembered as our "rock," our best friend, a wonderful teacher, a loving and caring husband, wonderful father, grandfather, and brother.


Woody is preceded in death by his parents, Margie Atkins McKnight and Woodrow McKnight, and grandparents, Minnie and John Atkins of Kilmichael.


Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Margaret Reid McKnight of Ridgeland; sons, Todd and Ashley McKnight of Canton, Brad and Julie McKnight of Canton, Greg and Marta McKnight of Brandon, and Charles and Lori Simpson of Birmingham, Ala.; daughters, Lisa Hardister of Level Cross, N.C., Kriss Kennedy of Ridgeland, AnJanette Luther of Asheboro, N.C.; sisters, Carol Bachio of Hennepin, III., Cindy McKnight of Stockton, Calif., and Beth Austin of Winona; brother, Neal McKnight of Kansas City, Mo.; and 12 grandchildren.


In lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Francis Building Fund, 4000 Tidewater Ln., Madison, MS 39110.
