Lyman Hanover Allen, son of Ephraim and Sarah Ann (Taylor) Allen, was born in Delaware County, Ohio on July 11, 1860. His twin sister was named Louanna Rebecca Allen. In 1868 the family moved to Rush County, Indiana, and then on to Jay county, Indiana in 1870.
On January 15, 1888 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana, Lyman married Flora L. Suman, daughter of George and Susanna (Longman) Suman. When Lyman's father died in 1895, Lyman and Flora were living in Wahpeton, North Dakota, where Lyman was the county superintendent of schools. By 1900 Lyman was teaching in Kansas City, Missouri, and he and Flora had had three children, one of whom was living. Dale Ephraim Allen had been born February, 1897 in North Dakota. Their next child, Edith, was born July 1, 1900 in Kansas City.
In 1904 Lyman was granted a patent in the United States, Mexico, and Canada for his invention of an ore roasting and oxidizing apparatus. The next year, he and partners who also were from Jay County, Indiana, and living in Kansas City, were reported to have done very well with their investments in the Cripple Creek, Colorado mines. By 1910, Lyman was in the insurance business.

His son Dale Ephraim Allen married Althea Virginia Treadwell and they lived in Georgia. His daughter Edith became the wife of Elmer Orrin Coldsnow and they lived in Missouri and then Kansas.
