Norwood was born in Stoneham, Middlesex, Mass. the son of, George Bartol and Charlotte (Parsons) Harris. He married, Minnie Helen Bohne. They had three children, Mary Ellen, Norwood Jr. and Charlotte Mae Harris. He died at the age of 34 years from TB, at the American Legion Home. He is buried next to his daughter Mary Ellen who passed on at age 8 years. His son Norwood Jr. is buried in the Bly Cemetery, Cass Co., Marcellus, Michigan and his daughter Charlotte is buried in the Adamsville Cemetery, Cass Co., Adamsville, Michigan. He had six sisters, Nellie Bartol (Harris) Weber, Hattie Rosene (Harris) Fitch, Ruth (Harris) Thombs, Winnifred(Harris) Earley, Marion (Harris) Spaulding, Louise R. (Harris) MacDonald.
Norwood, while serving in the World War, suffered from exposure (injury) to mustard gas.
At the age of one yr. he came to Portland, Maine with his family. After his enlistment in June 1918, he was assigned to the quartermaster's department at Camp Devens. Later he was transferred to Camp Mead. His desire to go to France to take part in the action there was thwarted by illness. Recovered, it seemed that his wish was about to be gratified when the Armistice was signed. He was assigned to Camp Humphries at the close of the war. Afflicted with tuberculosis, he removed to Grand Rapids, Mich., in the hope of a change for the better. He was able to work only two or three years from the time of the close of the war until his death. For one year he attended the State college at East Lansing, Mich. He later made a business of chicken-raising near Ada, MI. His family resided at Lansing and Ada, MI., and after he had entered the American Legion Home, they went to Augusta, MI.
A resident of Portland, Maine up to the time of enlistment for service in the World War. He came to Battle Creek, MI. from Portland.
He was a World War I Veteran, he had been ill for 10 years. He was hospitalized at the American Legion Hosptial for some time, he left and was home, returning for hospitalization just a week prior to his death, which occured on Sat. Funeral Services were held in the Community church, Augusta on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. F. M. Clough officiating. The pallbearers were six comrades from the hospital.
