The seventh of eight children. Her father, Charles Carroll, was a descendent of the first Charles Carroll, who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Her mother, Amanda Bowen Carroll, was the granddaughter of an African chief. Wife of Keiffer A. Jackson. Mother of Virginia, Juanita, Marion and Bowen Kieffer, Mrs. Carroll Jackson is recognized as the mother of the civil rights movement in Maryland and ran the Baltimore Branch of the NAACP for 35 years until 1970. Grandmother of the Honorable Clarence M. Mitchell III; Keiffer J. Mitchell, M.D.; Former Senator Michael B. Mitchell; and George D. Mitchell. Mrs. Carroll Jackson died at the age of 85 in 1975.
