John is the first of two children born to Mark (Mohammad) Bassir and Martha "Jane" Keeney. He was raised by his mother and step father, James David Person, on a farm near Cherry Grove, Oregon. He graduated from Gaston High School and earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and photography from Portland State University, a master's degree in pharmaceutical research from Wake Forest University, and an associate degree in management from Portland Community College.
John worked at Oregon Health Sciences University for 20 years. He was a union shop steward for AFSME at OHSU and was a member of the American Chemical Society. He photographed the first cloning of a monkey at the OHSU Primate Center.
John enjoyed camping, gardening and helping on the family farm. He planted many iris bulbs and pine trees at the farm. He often gathered and collected large rocks for his yard in Hillsboro. John rarely went anywhere without a can or a two liter bottle of diet Pepsi. He also enjoyed and excelled in photography. He did both artistic and scientific. His photos were published in Time magazine of the first cloning of a monkey. He also did photos for friends and family weddings. John was a very caring person and was always willing to go out of his way to help family and friends.
On Oct. 22, 2005, he married Tami Neulieb in Lake Oswego, Oregon. His son, Ian Shawn, was born May 31, 2007, four months after John passed away.

Within the few months that led up to that horrible day, he became consumed by an illness that took over his thoughts. John was loved by many who tried to help him and prayed for him. I am certain that John fought all that he could but the illness was too strong. He is now greatly missed.
