US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1840, opened a law practice in Vienna, Illinois and was a member of the State House of Representatives, 1842 to 1862. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army as major in the 31st Regiment, Illinois Volunteers. In 1865, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress, serving until 1867. From 1873 to 1881, he served as probate judge of Johnson County, Illinois and was a member of the State Senate, 1878 to 1882.
