Enrolled for duty 10 Apr 1862 at Batesville, Ark. as a Pvt. in Capt. Wm. Howard's 4th Reg't Mo. Inf. which became Co B then Co C, 1st & 4th Mo. Inf. after consolidation. He was appointed 2nd Sgt. June 1862. At the battle of Franklin, Tenn November 1864 he was shot through both legs and left in the hands of the enemy.
After the war he went back home to West Plains, Howell, Mo. and married Nancy Catherine Burton in 1867 in Missouri.
He and Nancy had 11 children.
