The son of Jacob & Elizabeth (Reisinger) Bender, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Saville Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 1, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. F, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
He married Sarah A. Sowers and fathered Blanch Ida (b. 08/21/66 - married Edward Luther Hall), Nettie May (b. 01/07/72), Cloyd Merton (b. @1877)), and Ada S. (b. 01/27/81 - married a Hench). Cause of his death is listed as "apoplexy" with "hemorrhage of the brain" a contributing factor.
