BEARD, Rufus Arch of Houston. Age 77. Died 1/6/1990 (Sat.) in Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston following a lengthy illness which began in 1986 when he had a series of strokes and was in a Houston nursing home. Services held (Tuesday) 1/9 at the Salty Church. Burial in Salty Cemetery near Thorndale. Rev. A.R. McGee officiated. 6 of his 9 grandsons were pallbearers: Michael Troy Menchaca and Thomas Wayne Beard, of Austin; David Ray Menchaca, Jay Arch Menchaca, Charles Michael Malone and John Nicholas Sion of Houston.

He was BORN 12/22/1912 in Thorndale, to Edward "Eddie" Charles & Esther Elizabeth Parton Beard. Reared by his paternal grandparents, Rufus M. & Lillie Caffey Beard, a pioneer farming and ranching family with holdings in the Salty & Conoley Communities south of Thorndale. He was employed with the USDA for 35 yrs. and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Member of First Christian Church in Waco. Preceded in death by brother, Ulrich Beard.

SURVIVORS: Wife, Laura Enola Davis Beard of Houston; 2 daughters, Peggy Menchaca, Mary Lou Beard Sion of Houston; son, Charles Thomas Beard of Colorado Springs, CO.; sister, Vera Bauerschlag of Thorndale; 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.
