John C. Kosky, 88, of Camillus, died Wednesday at home. John, a command navigator with the 8th Air Force based in England during World War II, was shot down on his 27th bombing mission over Germany on July 7, 1944. He was one of three survivors of his crew of 13 aboard a B-24 Liberator bomber. Captured immediately upon landing in his parachute, he was eventually interned at Stalag Luft I, a major prisoner- of-war camp in Northern Germany until liberated in mid- May 1945 by our Allied forces.
John served 10 years in the military and held the rank of captain when he left. He was a two-time Purple Heart recipient. A native of Wisconsin, Mr. Kosky was associated with Pennsylvania and New York firms prior to his retirement as an advertising executive, based in Syracuse.
Mr. Kosky served as commander of the Syracuse Chapter, American Ex-Prisoner of War. He was a member of the Community Affairs Committee, VA Medical Center, Public Affairs Officer Post 1540, American Legion, Camillus, NY , and a lifetime member of the Disabled War Veterans, Coonley- Nojaim MEM 30. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, Camillus.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, the former Blanche Rogers, and a son, David A. of Owasco.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Church, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Friends may call Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Syracuse, following the Mass.
