Born in Mt. Airy, NC as the last child of Robert and Bettie Sue Coltrane. He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College in Emory, VA with a BS in mathematics. He married Ruth Marie Hill of Emory, VA. Wanting to serve his country, Bill enlisted in the Air Force to be a pilot, but his vision was not good enough. He then enlisted in the US Army during WWII and was among the troops sent to Japan for the occupation after Japan surrendered. He worked his entire life for the US Gypsum Company and was highly respected there for his skills, knowledge and ability to fix anything. He had three daughters - Rebecca, Ann, and Elizabeth, five grandchildren - Laura, Lisa, Kara, Mike, and Meghan, eight great-grandchildren Amanda, Jonathan, Erin, Margaret, Caitlin, Emma, Elliott, and Virginia, and three great-great grandchildren - Gage, Chasen, and Lars.

Obituary: William Coltrane, 84, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.

He had been a resident of Emory since his retirement. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and was recently a member of the Emory United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. Mr. Coltrane was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and retired from U.S. Gypsum after 45 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Hill Coltrane; three daughters, Rebecca Greening of Lexington, N.C., Ann Hurt of Danville, Va., and Elizabeth "Bettie" Coltrane of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr. William Coltrane will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Emory & Henry Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Bennington officiating. There will be no visitation.
