ITHACA - Bernice Marie Bolwsby , 78, of 355 N. Van Dorns Road, died Sunday, December 26, 2004, at home. Born May 11, 1926 in Kingston, NY, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Nellie Post Hatfield and wife of the late Charles E. Bowlsby who died in 1983. Following their marriage in 1946, they moved to 219 Floral Avenue (the area which was known then as Ithaca's "Rhine") where they raised five children. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed at the Hillside Inn and later as a cook at Kelly's Dockside Café. Among her greatest joys were baking, playing cards, and doing jigsaw puzzles, but most important to her was her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she took great pride and joy in.

Mrs. Bowlsby is survived by her children, Sandra Fields (Dick), Judy Ross (Bill Boylan), David Bowlsby (Ann), George Bowlsby, and Rod Ross, all of Ithaca; 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren, and her sister, Elmira Wise. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bowlsby was predeceased by her son, Charles "Teddy" Bowlsby; grandson, Chris Hyer; and sisters, Bertha Platner and Minnie Mosher.

Services will be held at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, December 30 at the E.C. Wagner Funeral Home of Ithaca, Rev. Pete Hood officiating. Burial, in the spring, will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospicare, 172 E. King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.
