Her years as a small child were spent amid strife, for her mother and father were doing battle through a stormy marriage, after an almost unheard of divorce in 1852, she lived with her Lusby grandparents on a farm near Ashland in Lexington. She had all the educational advantages for girls of her day. She played and associated with Henry Clay's grandchildren. She experienced the Civil War at her door step with the comings and goings of Union and Confederate soldiers.
As a teenage girl, she was spirited and gay..popular with the young men, she was sophisticated and refined. She had a deep sense of personal pride. During the years in which her family was growing up, grandma enjoyed the luxury of household help and tutors for the younger children. Grandma was known to enjoy dressing up in her fur coat and diamond earrings and associating with special friends and acquaintances.
Grandma's declining years were spent with a cane and the inability to hear what others were saying. During this period of her life, she withdrew into a shell. She lost her spirit of gaiety--her pride turned to pity--she became cross and irritable at times, especially when the younger grandsons, the author included would follow her around through the house and let up all the window shades after she had so carefully lowered them to shut out the night.Grandma had no granddaughters to dote on--only grandsons. She enjoyed her share of spoiling and indulging, it was a coveted privilege for all her grandsons to know her. She lived to know all of them as teenagers or young adults." DC McMurtry
