According to the Muster Rolls, there is a John R. McNeill, Jr., Company F, 50th North Carolina Troops, who enlisted in Moor County [NC] on May 14, 1862, for the war, Preposted present in September-December, 1862, and September, 1863-February, 1864. Sent to hospital sick on October 23, 1864. No further records. I do believe this is this soldier, the last name on the marker could be a mis spelling such as others that have been discovered. He is recorded as being buried on February 6, 1865. This could be the same person.
