Spc. Zachariah J. Gonzalez, 23, of Indiana; was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash.; He died July 31 in Baghdad of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Also killed were Spc. Charles T. Heinlein Jr. and Spc. Alfred H. Jairala. He should have been home the day he died, but the Army extended his tour of duty. Zach was killed while serving in Iraq in the Army Reserve at age 23. Together with his parents, he is survived by, brother, Benedict Jacob Gonzalez; sister, Marina Elise Gonzalez,and brother, Seth Joseph Gonzalez; maternal grandparents, Luis and Josephine Galan; paternal grandmother, Maria de Carmen Gonzalez, and numerous close and loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
