US Congressman. Prior to becoming a lawyer, he was a teacher, newspaper editor and founded the Ava Community High School, Illinois in 1889. He was admitted to the bar in 1896 and opened a law practice Ava. From 1913 to 1917, he served in the Illinois State senate and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1916. In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second and to the four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1941. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in literary work and served as special adviser to the United States Ambassador at Mexico City from 1945 to 1946.
