Gertrude Doyle Colis Holon was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 22, 1895, to George H. Doyle and Williamina Coste Doyle. She married Joseph Ernest Colis(Colas) in 1919, and after many failed pregnancies and the death of a baby son, they became the parents of their son, Joseph Walbert Colis, who was born on December 31, 1923.
After Gertrude and Joe divorced, she worked as a seamtress in New Orleans for Bunk's and Haspell's Clothing Factory.
Gertrude went on to live in Boston, Massachusetts for awhile and then she decided to move to California. Her son joined the United States Navy in the early 1940's was stationed in the San Francisco Bay Area. She held the position of forelady for the Pendleton Company in San Francisco. She married for the second time to Clarence Holon and together they purchased 2 homes, and an apartment building near Highland Hospital in Oakland.
Gertrude was a very generous and loving woman. She was loved by all who knew her. Her response to new news was, "Well, I declare!" She had an infectious laugh and a great smile. She was known for preparing her famous "Gumbo" for family and friends. Her annual St. Joseph's Day celebration in her home became a family tradition. She was a great cook, seamtress and gardner. She loved canning fruits and vegetables from her garden, and sharing them with family and neighbors. She was survived by her son, Joseph W. Colis, who retired as a Chief Hospital Corpsman for the United States Navy, who served two tours of duty in Viet Nam, and his wife Ruth (Billie)Ashley Colis of Martinez, California; grand daughter, Sharon Colis Marquez of Simi Valley, California and grandson, Joseph Walbert Colis(Colas)Jr. She was the great grandmother of Kellie and Kimberlie Marquez, also from Simi Valley. Her legacy of other great grandchildren were to follow after her death. Kristopher Joseph Colis, Kevin Jason Colis, Ashley Chantal Colis and Marin Anais Colas. She would have been the great great grandmother of Carissa Denise Palomarez, Jessica Anneliese Palomarez, Adrianna Denise Chavez and Alaina Therese Chavez.
