Vern J Richins, 94, died of natural causes on July 2, 2007. He was born on April 24, 1913 in Pleasant Grove, Utah to Mark Samuel Richins and Margaret Elizabeth Wright. He married Wilma Smith in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 28, 1934. Together they settled in Draper, Utah and raised five children- three boys and two girls. Vern drove truck for Safeway for 37 years. He was active in the Lion's Club, city government, Draper Civic Club, the incorporation of Draper City, served on the city council and assisted in organizing the Draper City Fire Department. Vern was instrumental in organizing the Cub Scout program in the South Salt Lake Valley. He served as a trustee for the South Salt Lake County Mosquito Abatement District for 22 years. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and with his wife he served five missions for the church. Vern was generous in the sharing of his time, and sharing the produce from his garden with his friends and family. He is preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Wilma, TOGETHER FOREVER, and his daughter, Janice Spratling.
Vern is survived by his sons: LeLand (Linda), Dan (Suzanne), Mel (Terrie), all of Draper; a daughter, Mary Hertz (Kip), Boise, Idaho; son-in-law, John Spratling, South Jordan; also 21 grandchildren; 68 great-grand-children; 12 great-great-grand-children.
The family expresses thanks to the neighbors and friends for their help and loving friendship. We will all miss Vern's strong handshake and his visits in the red golf cart.
Funeral services will be held Fri. July 6, 2007, at 11 a.m. in the Draper 2nd LDS Ward Chapel, 1617 East 12700 South. Friends may call at Goff Mortuary, 8090 So. State, Thurs. 6-8 p.m. or Fri. at the church from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment, Draper City Cemetery.
