PNEUMONIA FATAL TO P.R.R. VETERAN

William Aiken, Sr., Wounded In Civil War and Promoted For Bravery, Expires at Home After Short Illness.

William Aiken. sr., a retired Pennsylvania railroad employee and a veteran of the Civil War, died last night at 11 o'clock at his home, 909 Seventh avenue, after a short illness. Death was due to pneumonia. Mr. Aiken was one of the most prominent war veterans in the city and had an enviable record covering the four years of his enlistment. He was a member of Co. F, Seventy-sixth Pennsylvania volunteers, enlisting at Harrisburg on Sept. 18, 1861. He was mustered into regular army service on Oct. 28 of the same year. The veteran was a member of the Keystone Zouaves under Captain Joseph R. Findley, being mustered in as a private. On July 1, 1863, while serving with his company he was wounded at Fort Wayne, S. C., sustaining a gunshot wound of the right leg. Following his recovery he was promoted to the rank of sergeant in Co. F., his appointment being made April 1, 1864. He was mustered out on Nov. 28, 1864. He fought in the leading engagements in the civiI war, seeing service at Antietam, Chancellorsville, first and second battles of Bull Run. Fredericksburg, Murfreesboro, Fort Donaldson, Cedar Mountain, Fair Oaks and Gettysburg. Mr. Aiken was a post colonel of the Commandery encampment. No. 17, Union Veterans’ legion, and a member of the G. A. R. post. No. 468. He was also affiliated with the First Baptist church and the with the P. R. R. veterans' association and relief. He was born at Tipton, April 28. 1839, coming to Altoona 60 years ago. He accepted a position with the Pennsy in this city in 1873, being employed in the freight shop at First street. He served for a period of thirty-six years, being retired on May 1, 1909. He was married on Feb. 22, 1866, to miss Nannie J. Stiner, who died twelve years ago. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. A. J. Lohr, William Aiken. jr., Mrs J. S. Hartzell and ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. The funeral will be in charge of G A. post. No. 468.76th PA inf. Co. F
