BLACKSBURG - Bryant Jay Lawter, 14, died Monday, May 22, 2006, in Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

He was born in Spartanburg, SC to J.H. Lawter Jr. of the home and Teresa Diane Woodrum of Gaffney.

He was a student at Blacksburg Middle School and a member of Patterson Springs Baptist Church.
Services will be held at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Blacksburg Middle School students spent a moment of silence Thursday morning in memory of a 14-yearold classmate.

Bryant Jay Lawter of Blacksburg died Monday at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after being involved in a traffic accident in Grover in Cleveland County, N.C.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Lawter was a passenger in a 1995 Saturn driven by Jeremy Wayne Putnam, 30, of 814 Longbranch Road, Grover.

Police said Putnam was traveling on Rural Paved Road 2238 when his vehicle ran off the right side of the road, struck a culvert and became airborne before crashing into a fence.

Authorities said Putnam and a 13-year-old male passenger from Grover were both seriously injured. All three individuals were ejected. None were wearing a seat belt.

Putnam has been charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. More charges are expected, police said.
