San Leandro Marine Dies in Vietnam

San Leandro - A San Leandro youth, Marine Pfc. Robert T. Abina, 20, has been reported killed in action in Vietnam.

His mother, Mrs. Juanita Abina, 557 Joaquin Ave., said authorities told her that her son had been killed Nov. 30 in action in Quang Tri Province. He died of a gunshot wound in the head.

Pfc. Abina graduated from Pacific High School and joined the Marines April 18, 1967, his mother said. He left for Vietnam, where he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Sept. 23.

He is also survived by his father, Floyd P. Abina; two brothers, David, 28, and Richard, 26, and a sister, Mrs. Irene Crossman of Newark.

He enlisted 18 April 1967 at the Oakland Recruiting Office.
Arriving in Vietnam 25 September 1967. Killed during combat one mile from the DMZ during Operation Kentucky.
