He was a Philadelphia lawyer whose clients included the Girard Bank, the [Philadelphia] Savings Fund Society, and the Pennsylvania Railroad, among others. He was the author of several books in law: Principles of Equity, Hill on Trustees, and Adams on Equity. He provided notes and annotations for the American edition of Kerr on Receivers. He was the law partner of Isaac Wayne MacVeagh; he was also Professor of Civil Procedure, Evidence and Equity, and Dean of the Faculty at the Law School at the University of Pennsylvania.
