Chas. Kasper, Former Grocer, Dies at Age 80

Charles Nicholas Kasper, 80, a retired Madison grocer, died unexpectedly at 6:15 p.m. yesterday at his home, 701 E. Second Street, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Kasper, he came with his parents to Madison from Pittsburgh, Pa. when only a year old. He was educated in schools here, and spent the rest of his life in this city.

He was in the grocery business here for 33 years beginning in 1910 when the grocery store located at the northeast corner of Walnut and Second was purchased from the late William J. McBride.

The business was moved to the southeast corner of Main and East in 1930, where Kasper's Grocery is presently located. Charles Kasper retired from the grocery in 1943, selling the business to his son, William, its present owner.

In addition to being a grocer, Mr. Kasper also maintained many rental properties in this area.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and of its Holy Name Society, and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by five sons: Mathias, North Vernon; Charles, Indianapolis; Herman, Dayton; and John and William, both of Madison; five daughters: Mrs. Rosella Cox and Mrs. Marcella Zubaty, both of Madison; Mrs. Anna Hughes, Indianapolis; Mrs. Mary Loos, Indianapolis; and Mrs. Theresa Claxton, Franklin; four brothers: Oscar, August and Herman all of Indianapolis; John, Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters: Mrs. Frank Waters, Pittsburgh, Penn.; and Mrs. Edward Welsh, Louisville; 40 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews

A Requiem High Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Church, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Lytle Mortuary after noon tomorrow. Members of the parish will recite the rosary at 8 p.m. Friday.
