Gary J. Gasawski Sr., 60, of Belleville, Ill., born March 13, 1947, in East St. Louis, Ill., passed away July 13, 2007, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, IL, due to complications of his battle with cancer.

He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, family man, and dedicated community servant.

He will be dearly missed by many.

Gary dreamed of becoming a firefighter since childhood. He started fulfilling his dreams by becoming a volunteer with the Signal Hill Volunteer Fire Department for four years and Northwest Fire Department for seven years. On Sept. 13, 1976, he joined the Belleville Fire Department. Gary served with Belleville for 28 years. He was a member of IAFF Local 53 and served on the executive board of the union for Local 53. He was a member of the Associated Fire Fighter of Illinois Honor Guard. Gary retired from the Belleville Fire Department as Assistant Fire Chief on Sept. 13, 2004.

He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Gasawski.
Surviving are his wife, Karen, nee Kehoe, Gasawski, whom he married on Dec. 6, 1968; his children, Jill (Denny) Doss of O'Fallon, Ill., Gary Jr. (Amanda) Gasawski of Belleville, Ill., and Chrissy (Shawn) Kaffer of Phoenix, Ariz.; a grandson, Braden Gasawski of Belleville, Ill.; a granddaughter, Jocelyn Kaffer, due in November 2007; his mother, Betty, nee Melichar, Gasawski; a sister, Becky (Gary) Gatten of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Kevin (Patty) Gasawski of Belleville, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 15 , 2007, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill.

A firefighter walk-through will be held at 6 p.m. and a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Funeral: Funeral procession will leave at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 16 , 2007, from George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Monsignor Bernard Voss officiating.

Burial will be at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, Ill.
