Arlie Marguerritte Hummel Baird, died July 12, 2007, in her Norfolk home. Mrs. Baird was born March 9, 1921, in Lansing, Mich., the daughter of the late George Ellwood Hummel and Mila Ruth Kempher Hummel. She attended Lansing public schools and was a graduate of Lansing Eastern High School in 1939. She then attended Lansing Business School. After a short time in private employment she began service as a secretary in Michigan State Headquarters, Selective Service System, where she remained for the duration of World War II. She then remained in federal civil service as an employee of the U.S. Property and Disbursing Office, a federal agency supporting the Michigan National Guard. It was at the National Guard's first summer encampment that she met Robert J. Baird, a member of the guard on active duty with the State's Department of Military Affairs. They were married in June 1948 and in 1950 built a home near Dimondale, Mich. By September 1951 she became a full-time mother and homemaker. A second daughter was born in July 1953. After her children were in high school she took part-time employment in the yard-goods section of a department store. Here began her love for fabrics and she soon became an even more accomplished seamstress, making many of her children's clothes. When the children had moved out of high school and into college she accepted employment as bookkeeper in the Holt, Mich., school administrative offices. She moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., with her husband in 1977 when he accepted employment there after completing his National Guard and Army Service. In 1983 the couple moved to Chesapeake to be near their two daughters and granddaughter. Arlie was a member of the Lansing Olivet Baptist Church for several years, singing in the choir. Later, after their move to Dimondale, she became a leader in the activities of the First Presbyterian Church, eventually becoming a deacon and then a ruling elder. After their move to Grand Rapids, she took an active role in the United Presbyterian Women's Organization at John Knox Presbyterian Church, and later became its president. She supported her husband in all of his military and Masonic activities and was a member of the St. Andrews Society of Lansing. Survivors include her husband, Col. Robert J. Baird, U.S. Army retired; two daughters, Rozalyn Baird Klein and her husband John and Priscilla S. Baird-Wroton and her husband Carlisle, all of Norfolk; three granddaughters, Kathryn Klein Eriksen (Russell) of Durham, N.C., Shelley Louise Klein and Laura Jane Klein; and seven cousins in Michigan and Indiana. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Second Presbyterian Church in Norfolk by the Rev. Steven E. Frazier. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7 until 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Baird, U.S. Army retired; two daughters, Rozalyn Baird Klein and her husband John and Priscilla S. Baird-Wroton and her husband Carlisle, all of Norfolk; three granddaughters, Kathryn Klein Eriksen (Russell) of Durham, N.C., Shelley Louise Klein and Laura Jane Klein; and seven cousins in Michigan and Indiana.
