ELBERT FRANCIS HARBERT - Was born near Clarksburg, Harrison County, W. Va May 9, 1845 and died at Leavenworth, Kansas, January 21, 1909 from the effect of a fall from a barn loft by which his neck was broken. He was working in the country at the time, having a short time before left the soldiers home at Leavensworth. He was 63 years, 7 mos and 12 days old at the time of his death. Mr. Harbert served in a W. Va. Cavalry regiment during the rebellion and was honorably discharged, but his record as a soldier is not available at this time. He was married to Sarah Ellen Shriver while they were both quite young but the date of their marriage is also unavailable. Nine children were born to this union seven of whom survive, as follows: Mrs. Nettie Combs, Rockport, Mol, Mrs. J. M. Amsberry, Mason City, Neb., John C. Denver, Colo, Mrs. J. C. McGowan, North Platte, Neb., Watler (sic) L. Ansley, Nebr., Miss Vivian Blanche, Kansas City, Miss Ethelyn Grace, Lewiston, Neb. Mrs. Combs, Mrs. Amsberry, Mrs. McGowan and Walter were present at the funeral which was conducted from the Amsberry residence in Mason at 10 A.M. Wednesday, Jan. 27, by Edler Miles pastor of the M.E. church. The services where (sic) directed by the Grand Army Veterans, assisted by the Sons of Veterans, and was very impressive. The remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife, who died Feburary (sic) 26, 1888, in the Ash Grove cemetry (sic) northeast of town. The family came to Mason in April 1887 from Mason Co, W. Va.
