Carey was a successful farmer and merchant, and had substantial land holdings in Giles County. He purchased a house in Pulaski at one point so his younger children could live and attend school there.
After Betsy died in 1876, he married Elizabeth Wood Redus, widow of Alfred Redus. Her place of burial is unknown.
You will sometimes see Carey referenced as "Carey Jr." or "Cary Jr." in records in Giles County. This was to distinguish him from his uncle "Cary Sr." who also lived in the county.
