Boy Drowned in Mill Race During Swim
Efforts of Brother to Save Howard Armstrong are Fruitless.
Howard Armstrong, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Coleman Armstrong, 2118 Lagonda Av., drowned at 2 p.m., Tuesday in the mill race, near Lagonda Av. The boy was swimming in the Race with his brother, Emory, 14, and several other youths when the tragedy occurred.
According to the story told by the youthful witnesses, Howard had gone to the surface and they immediately began rescue operations.
Emory Armstrong ran to the place where his brother was last seen and plunged into the water in an attempt to rescue him. Emory was unable to locate his smaller relative and was forced from the water, exhausted. He was pulled out by companions as he was on the verge of drowning.
The body of Howard was recovered by Milton Young, 16, of 1516 N. Belmont Av., after it had been in the water for about 15 minutes. Efforts of Dr. L. L. Syman and the fire department lungmotor squad to revive the boy proved futile.
The Armstrong boy is survived by his father and mother; grandfather, Howard Armstrong; one brother, Emery; and two sisters, Glenna and Bertha.
