Edward Jones Armstrong, Jr. was the son of Edward Jones Armstrong (1808-1877) of Rockingham County, VA, and his wife, Sophia (b. ca. 1809). The senior E. J. Armstrong represented Harrison County, VA, in the state legislature from 1838-1842 and 1843-1844, and was a representative to the Virginia Convention of 1861. Armstrong Jr. enlisted in the Confederate army as a 1st lieutenant in the 31st Virginia Volunteers, Company A. He was wounded 30 May 1864. After the war, he attended the University of Virginia in sessions 42-44 (1865-1868), later practicing as a lawyer in Luray, Page County, VA.
Armstrong Jr. married first, Mary Elizabeth Martin (1842-27 Jul 1890), by whom he had no children. Secondly, about 1892, he married Clara L. Armstrong (1862-1951), by whom he had three children, Elizabeth May, Mary Lee, and Edward Jones Armstrong.Edward J. Armstrong, Jr. died in Page County, VA, and was buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Luray, where he rests with his family.
