Chas. Barthold, Sr., Dead.

Wednesday morning shortly after midnight, surrounded by his wife and children, the soul of Chas. Barthold, Sr., winged its flight from this world to the rest awaiting it beyound the skies.

Mr. Barthold had been ill for ten days or two weeks and his death had been expected for several days. The direct cause of it was acute softening of the brain.

Mr. Barthold was born in Leipsic, Germany, March 30, 1827, which which made him over 74 years old. In 1851, at the age of 24, he emigrated to America, living in Pennsylvania one year, then coming south to New Orleans where he stayed six months. In 1853 he moved to Texas and settled at Mount Enterprise, Rusk County. Here he entered the mercantile business, which vocation he followed the remainder of his life, thereby being, at his death, one of the oldest merchants in the state. In 1877 he moved to this city with his family where he has lived since.

On July 15, 1836, he married Miss Jane Rettig, of Arkansas. By the union there were ten children born, six boys and four girls, nine of whom with the mother survive the father. They are: Mrs. Jno. Simmons, Dodd City, Kan.; Chas. C. Barthold, Weatherford; Paul Barthold, Chihuahua, Mexico; Mrs. Edith Simmons, Mrs. R. B. Milliken, Mrs. Frank Porter, Oscar Barthold, Curtt Barthold and Walter Barthold all of Weatherford.

Mr. Barthold was a good citizen, liberal in his views, and always ready to forward and promote enterprises. He lived a quiet life being devoted to his family and home. In his death Weatherford has lost a worthy citizen, his wife a fond and devoted husband, his children a forbearing and indulging father. The HERALD joins with the many friends of the family in extending its sincerest sympathies in this their hour of bereavement.
Peace to his ashes.

A vast throng of sympathizing friends were present with the relatives at the funeral of Chas. Barthold, Sr., yesterday afternoon. The services were conducted at the residence by Rev. Geo. M. Oakley, after which the body was carried to the City Cemetery and laid to rest. The pall - bearers were Messrs. G. A. Holland, C. W. McGeehee, R. E. Bell, L. T. Davis, Howard Martin and C. D. Hartnett.
